Our Shetland Sheep Flocks

Sheep in SnowAll the sheep we breed on our crofts are native Shetland sheep and although not registered organic are bred using organic principles. Native Shetland sheep are a small hardy breed.

Our sheep have access to the foreshore where they supplement their heather and herb rich diet by eating seaweed. This gives the meat a distinctive superior flavour.

Half of the flock are kept on Hildasay, a small island offshore from Scalloway, and the remainder at Burland.

Many of them are coloured and originated from the island of Foula, 25 miles west of Shetland. These are considered to be of a more primitive origin.
